Robben Island tours cancelled

I booked tickets for Robben Island boat trip and prison tour, the first time the boat ride was cancelled on the last minute and they gave us an option to reschedule or cancel, I chose to reschedule for the next available spot which was the next day.

When we arrived for the morning ferry the next day, the boat tour was cancelled yet again, they couldnt give a valid reason that made sense and they are nonchalant about the shoddy service.

Unfortunately, this is all too common with Robben Island.
The staff behind the front desk or the staff that notifies the cancellation, they dont necessarily know why the tour was cancelled, they'll just tell you its the weather even if its as hot as hell.


Robben Island may cancel the tour If they feel the safety of passengers could be compromised.
This decision isn't taken lightly and im sure there's some sort of Port Captain that has final say.

Any of the following reasons could cause a delay or cancellation:
  • If there's a problem with the ferry
  • If its too windy over sea or on the island
  • If the ocean is too rough
  • If there's a possibility that the weather and sea conditions may change while the passengers are still on the Island or on the return trip

Most of the above can only be decided on moments before the tour is supposed to leave, which is why they wait until the minute to inform the clients if the tour has been cancelled.

If you arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the time, you will see the ferry going out to check on the weather and sea conditions, its at that time that they make the final decision.
