Planning a Road Trip, Cape Town to Johannesburg

I'm trying to plan a road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town in April.
I arrive in Johannesburg on Tuesday the 2nd April at Johannesburg OR Tambo and fly back from Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport on the 16th so it could be a round trip or I could fly back from Cape Town.
I'm looking for recommendations from local residents, given the time allocated, how would you plan your trip ?.
  • What is the best route to take ?
  • Is a road trip safe ? any tips and info will be greatly appreciated.
  • With which company and which car should I hire, do I need a 4x4 ?
  • Given the time frame which attractions would you recommend in and around Cape Town and Johannesburg or along the way ?
  • How much time should I spend at each destination ?
  • Which Towns should I stop over en-route to Cape Town ?
  • Should I carry cash ?
I'm hiring a car and traveling with my wife and 2 children. I haven't made any reservations or bookings yet.
This is my first time in South Africa, any tips and advice will be appreciated.
