What is the safe distance between you and the car in front of you and what does a safe following distance mean ?

The recommended safe following distance between to vehicles is 2 to 3 seconds. This is under good driving conditions and should be considered the bare minimum. The distance should be increased to at least 6 seconds if you foresee any potential risk. Ill post a more complete answer shortly

The recommended safe following distance is 2 to 3 seconds in ideal conditions.
If you are driving at night, if the road is slippery or if the conditions are unfavourable your should increase the distance by enough time that will allow you to respond to a potential hazard.

The safe following distance is the time needed for a driver the recognise potential danger and react accordingly.

There are a few things to take into consideration:

  • The awareness of the driver in front of you - The response time of the driver in front of you may be slower than yours
  • The weight of your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you - The heavier the vehicle the longer it takes to slow down
  • Your vehicles brakes and the brakes of the vehicle in front of you - The braking capabilities of vehicles are not always the same, your vehicle may take longer to slow down than the vehicle in front of you which could cause a collision
  • Pedestrians and road conditions
  • The weather
