This is a very common question because in South Africa we refer to a tow-hitch as a tow bar, the part that is used to hook a trailer is actually called a tow hitch. Do a google or bing image search and you will see the difference.

The correct question is "tow bar", its basically a solid bar that joins both vehicles so that when the front vehicle brakes, the rear vehicle also slows down.
