Driving Lessons for the deaf

Can a person who is deaf or hard of hearing obtain a learners and driving license in South Africa?

If they can, Are there any special requirements that they need or advice I can get relating to training and booking etc

To answer your first question, the hearing impaired can certainly apply for a learners and drivers license and there are no special requirements.

The drivers exam is a practical test. From my experience, a person thats hard of hearing or deaf doesnt have a problem with practically applying rules and observations or getting into the habit of certain exercises even if it takes a little more practice.

The K53 theory learners test is however confusing, even for a hearing person.
A big part of the learners test is comprehension. A lot of learners, even though they understand the sign, rule or observation, they dont always understand the question or answers pertaining to the sign, rule or observation. This can be a little more challenging for the hearing impaired because they dont always understand the vocabulary (again... from the little experience that ive had with learners)

Do the practice tests with learner, make sure they understand each question and the difference between the correct and incorrect answers however subtle they may be.
