I have an Audi A4 2011 model, its a 1.8t sedan.
I was driving on the highway, after about 5km the water warning light came on and I immediately pulled over, when i popped the bonnet i noticed the water reservoir was low.

I waited about 20 minutes for my brother to bring me a canister of water, I topped it up and then drove home, just as i got into my road the water light came on again and the heat gauge needle started rising very quickly, I switched off the car and we pushed it into the driveway.

Over the next few days I tried to pin point the problem and realised the car wasn't leaking any water, the engine and my driveway is also dry.

I let the car idle for about 30 minutes and the water didn't drop but as soon as i drive for about 5 km then the water gets less but there are no visible signs of leakages from underneath the car.

I took the car to a workshop and they said they have to strip the engine to determine the fault before they can give me a quotation. I felt this was unnecessary for an established workshop, Im sure they could speculate with some level of accuracy. Someone must've experienced something like this before even if its not on the exact vehicle.

What can the problem be based on the symptoms and roughly what can expect to spend on the repair.
Are there any tests that i can do on my own to narrow down the problem.

Im just trying to establish what i am getting myself into
